Chinese Sturgeon

- 阅读次数: There is a lot of Chinese Sturgeon living happily in the sea. It’s a very valuable fish. The skin of Chinese Sturgeon can be make into shoes and bags. People eat its flesh as food. People sell the eggs as expensive caviar. Also, people use the fish to treat cancer.
The Chinese Sturgeon is the earliest Sturgeon in the world. It appeared 200 million years ago. However, they still only live in the China Yangtze River. It can truly be said, they are living fossil.
Chinese Sturgeon is a kind of large fresh water and a special habitat of migratory fish. They are found in the Yangtze River. They will go to live in the sea when they have power to get the food by themselves. They need about 10 years to mature. After 10 years, they will go back to Yangtze River to spawn from July to August each year. They will go to live in the sea and return to the Yangtze River when the next July comes. They do that year after year.
The Yangtze River is the only place that the Chinese Sturgeon will go to spawn. People from other countries used to capture the Chinese Sturgeon to grow in their rivers. However, the Chinese Sturgeon still went black to the Yangtze River to spawn. The length of the fish is about 200 to 500 centimeters (6 to 15 feet long). The female Chinese Sturgeon is about 172 to 300 kilogram and the male Chinese Sturgeon is about 40 to 120 kilograms. The largest Chinese Sturgeon in the world is 550 kilogram. Though, the Chinese Sturgeon is large in size, they only like to eat the small fish and shrimp.
From the pictures we can see, the Chinese Sturgeon was seriously over-fished. The dirty water made the Chinese Sturgeon died in a huge amount. Also, after this dam (Gezhouba) was built, the Chinese sturgeon had no place to spawn and less water to live. The population of Chinese Sturgeon became less and less and became endangered species.
In 1983, China began to protect the Chinese Sturgeon in many ways. They made laws to stop people from fishing the Chinese Sturgeon. The fishermen and the scientists couldn’t catch the Chinese Sturgeon any more. China began to educate the important of the Chinese Sturgeon. They taught the young children to adults. They also built protected area for the Chinese Sturgeon to live. They had methods to allow Chinese Sturgeon to go back to the Yangtze River every year. They made stamps of cartoon Chinese Sturgeon to make people care about this fish and protect with all their power. The Chinese people also built Chinese Sturgeon museum to educate everyone about this fish.
What a special animal! We must protect the Chinese Sturgeon in the word forever. The Chinese Sturgeon museums should open free for all people to learn and to know more about the Chinese Sturgeon. I learned many things after I finish the project, I am happy to know about the Chinese Sturgeon. I learned not only about protecting the Chinese Sturgeon, but also the importance of protecting all animals. I also learned when people work together; we can save the animals even when they are endangered.
